When and If You Should Resize Your Ring

My friend RB recently emailed me. She’s pregnant and she’s at that stage of pregnancy where hands and feet are starting to get swollen. Been there, done that,so not fun. Her engagement ring was getting super tight and she knew it was time to take it off before it got stuck. When you are used to wearing a piece of jewelry everyday, you can feel very naked without it. Especially something as important as an engagement ring.  She wanted to know, should she size the ring now that it no longer fit or should she wait?

I advised her that she definitely should not touch her ring yet. Most women at some point will have to remove their wedding rings during pregnancy. Within a few weeks to a few months of giving birth, swellings tends to go down significantly and if she sizes it now, she’ll likely need to resize again.

Of course there are caveats to every rule and some women’s feet and hands never go back to where they were. If it’s several months and she still is unable to wear the ring, then it makes legitimate sense to size the ring up.

So what does a girl do till then? Wear a fake! When my ring got too tight to fit, I bought myself a gorgeous cz in rhodium plated sterling silver. No one could tell, and I didn’t have to feel bereft without my ring. There are lots of gorgeous fakes out there that can be a stand in.
